Track real life airplanes in Second Life

Hamlet Au, editor of the New World Notes-blog about Second Life, has a very interesting post today (24th of September 2007) about real life airplanes being tracked and monitored in an Second Life application.

I strongly recommend all SL-gigs to take a closer look into this – something seemingly useless – but with the right development could be the natural extension for courier-services like UPS, DHL, US Postal or even the Royal Danish Mail service (who already a somewhat developed public tracking system for parcels delivery).

Or maybe this mash-up will us RL-sailors follow the much braver sailors in Volvo Ocean Race or Americas cup. With 3D-rendering of weather conditions, waves and temperature development I see a much more spectator-friendly version of the most rough sailing races in the world.

Thanks to Hamlet Au (Wagner James Au) for the story: “Planespotting: Google Earth/Second Life mash-up tracks LAX airplane in dynamic, immersive scale model“.

Additionally you should also check the SL-demo: “Airplane tracking in Second Life” on YouTube.
