SL-online seminar end with a crash

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

The already prosponed seminar for the danish IT-University class ended up being a soso-success.

Already from the start there were probs. Some of the 11 students couldn’t get online or couldn’t receive the group member notes I made. All in all only six avatars showed up on my doorstep – including their teacher.

Luckily we got all six avs to ABC Sandbox, where they had a chance to try out the SL building tools for a while. It went ok. I think the students had fun, really :-)

Then next stop were the Club Intereference, where owner Chrissy Welinder awaited the class. And this were the second strike against the tour. Now only four students made it through. Two crashed due to connection probs at the IT-University. It was not even a SL-flaw this time *lol*

However the four – with their RL-classmates hangin’ over their shoulders watching – had some fun and got to talk to one of the most dedicated music-community leaders in SL. Questions were asked and lots of inspiration where purchased, I’m sure.

Third stop were with Kristopher Tenk at the AICR – the cancer research-guys. This was meant to be an example of what SL also can be used for. But unfortunately we never got THAT far… Well.. I made it there… But the final four students crashed too.

Leaving me alone with Kristopher Tenk – not that I mind :-) He’s a great guy.

Me (left) and Kristopher Tenk waiting for the IT-University students, that never came because the University-connection failed them… and they all crashed one by one :-(

And that marked the end of my first tour/seminar in SL. Lot of things to be learned about getting a hold of a bunch of students in SL – a bag of fleas *lol* But also about time. SL always takes up more time, than it should.. And I should know that already, huh.

Another great celebration at the Club Interference

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

Saturday 27th were Duran Duran leadsinger Simon Le Bon’s 49th birthday, and of course this wasn’t going to be bypassed unoticed in Second Life.

Around 2pm (Linden time) people started gathering at the Club Interference, where owner Chrissy Welinder were ready with a special event T-shirt, the updated tour-plan leading up to the next Duran Duran album release on November 13th and of course lots of other Duran Duran-stuff.

And for the really die-hard-need-to-know fans… Get yourself a flight ticket to NYC. The band WILL be in New York when the album ‘Red Carpet Massacre’ releases. From the 2nd to the 13th there’ll be 10 gigs at the Broadway stage at Barrymore Theatre. For the less wealthy in Europe there’ll be an oppotunity on December 3rd, Chrissy tells. London at the Odeon on Leicester Square.

It’s not really often I run into really, really, really dedicated fans like Chrissy Welinder. This german girl/woman spends all her spare time (it seems) on three things only – paying tribute to either David Sylvian or british rock legends Duran Duran OR… Traveling the world to see them perform.

Chrissy owns an entire island dedicated only to Duran Duran-groupies. On it is a huge castle containing the Club Interference, where Duranies from all over the world come do worship their idols.

Duranies celebrate Simon le Bon saturday 27th

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

Another great excuse for a party comes up this weekend at the Club Interference. Owner Chrissy Welinder just send out invitations to huge birthday party for DuranDuran leadsinger Simon le Bon who turns 49 this saturday (27th of October).

Not much is known yet, while Chrissy herself are offline chasing musicians. But one would really not be surprised if Simon turns up to promote the upcoming Duran-album (due 13th of November)… Or well.. yeah.. ok, I’ll be seriously thrilled if he turns up.

According to newly updated rumours the band is STILL planning to open up a Duran Island, theme park or something else in Second Life, so sooner or later dedicated fans can do more, than just visit Club Interference and LISTEN to the music, interviews etc. etc.

L$222402 raised for cancer research on 2nd auction

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

Kristopher Tenk (Kris Munro) and the AICR-crew managed to raise no less than L$222402 (around US$800) throwing the second charity auction in SL this year.

Around 50 dedicated avatars (my count) showed up at the newly build Loch Lomond Ruin in SL Scotland, to stand together against the no. 1 burden to ppl in the industrialized world. Among them Jack Glenelg, owner of AICR in Second Life.

Best bid was set by Tracy Starbrook, who wanted to make sure she got her CT Broek with her home, and hoisted staggering L$25000 :-)

The bids were: (gender) ‘Subject’ (Bidder) – ‘prize’

  • (m) CT Broek (Tracy Starbrook) – 25000
  • (f) Goldie Larson (CHUCK Soderstrom) – 21000
  • (f) Sula Laval (CHUCK Soderstrom) – 20000
  • (m) Paulza Petrov (Katt Ferrais) – 18000
  • (m) CHUCK Soderstrom (Linzi Berjis) – 16000
  • (m) Stickboom Pinion (LassDream McMahon) – 16000
  • (f) Gabriella Meriman (Ley Wrangler) – 13100
  • (f) Linzi Bergis (Ley Wrangler) – 10001
  • (f) Vor Torok (Karl Zhong) – 10001
  • (f) Endless Miles (CHUCK Soderstrom) – 10000
  • (m) Balthier Dagostino (cookiedianne Rhode) – 10000
  • (f) Lake Rhode (Stickboom Pinion) – 10000
  • (m) Ley Wrangler (Linzi Berjis) – 8800
  • (m) Jack Glenelg (Mistral Cale) – 5500
  • (f) Mistral Cale (Dexter Tones) – 5500
  • (m) Tam Kaminski (Elouise Lane) – 5000
  • (f) Mellody Roux (Indiana Bade) – 5000
  • (m) Mark Lock (Vor Torok) – 3000
  • (m) Kristopher Tenk (?) – 2500
  • (m) hilaire Beaumont (Vor Torok) – 2000
  • (m) GJ Hennesy (Tracy Starbrook) – 1000

End result of L$217402 – adding the extra 5000 from cookiedianne Rhode who crashed in the middle of a very important bid (hrm, hrm… me!).

Real art and false paintings on display

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

It’s not everyday I get to write about art in Second Life. Eventhough I sometimes consider the good designers (Julia Hathor, Ava Weyland and Aimee Weber) as artists.

Today I stumbled across the Palace of Classic Paintings – a four story building full of Van Gogh’s, Rembrandt’s, Monet’s etc. etc. – Obviously a pearl for all of us, who has the ability to loose track of time and place completely around divine art. I hung out for I think 2 or 3 hours – Engulfed by the details that makes them artists and me a common amateur.

It’s so impressing, that many of the features is visible in the virtual world as well. Lighting and texture (eventhough entirely digital) stands out from the “canvas” as though they were real.

I was also very please to reunite with one of my favorite paintings – “Girl with a pearlearring” by Johannes Vermeer. As I’m sure many guys have had through time, I had a little crush on that mysterious girl once.

Vermeer and Fuseli (maybe)

BUT… as in real life, amateurs like me, must watch out for forgeries. So my eyes fell up the painting “Nightmare” by the british painter John Henry Fuseli. As novice I had never heard of Fuseli before so I looked him up in Wikipedia.

Surprise, surprise – the painting I was falling in love with in the SL-museum was NOT the Fuseli 1781 oilpainting. Of course it’s a matter of who you trust. But I have no reason to doubt Wikipedia. And here John Henry Fuseli’s “Nightmare” looks like this:

Now I just wonder who made the painting in Second Life? ‘Cause I like that too :-)
