SL-video focus on climate change

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

It’s called Machinima – short virtual videos from Second Life. And the idea spawns a whole new reign of ideas of what to use SL for.

For instance this, where Dane Flemming Congrejo produced this small piece about the climate changes in a not so distant future. You might say it’s primitive… But it sure works in my opinion.

On the blog mirrorworld.dk you can find more on Machinima and other SL and Virtual World stuff.

Thanks to Jimmy from Mirrorworld for the tip and thanks to Charlotte S. H. Jensen for the link to the video.

How SL-graphics might improve

Just wanted to show you, what I hope awaits us all regarding to hardware performance and further SL development.

Robbie Dingo has pushed it to the edge in his blog ‘My Digital Double‘. Be impressed :-)

Thanks Rob *thumbs up*

Is SL the future of internet?

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

It seems that it’s become very popular in Denmark to criticize Second Life. Especially people known to be experts in the new media business are giving it the axe.

  • “The internet sort of brings ppl in the world together. SL does quite the opposite”, I heard a guy say.
  • “Ppl are not even fully familiar with web 1.0 informationarchitecture and RL-usability yet. SL is way to early and too full of flaws still to survive anything”, another guy said.
  • “SL is nothing but dating, Roleplaying soaps and poor surrogate porn”, a third expert judged.

But has virtual worlds really no future as an appendix to RL (real life)?

I briefly met Regis Braathens, the Editor-in-Chief of the SL tabloid ‘The AvaStar‘. He is not that sceptic, though he has to admit SL has some serious flaws still:

“SL is a test laboratory for the future internet and not the future in itself,” he told me.

“There is too many problems that I can’t see SL turning around in order to for it to be able to become a mass portal in the future. The main problem is, that it takes the average person 4 hours to understand SL. That has to drop to half an hour, in order for SL to become a mass portal.”

I think maybe Regis is right. On the question “What is SL?” I used to answer: “A sort of internet you can walk into”. I was mocked terribly for that remark. So now I just shut up when asked. It’s not a new internet… yet!!!

But, I wonder what other people think about this? What will we demand from a future more virtual internet?

Did you hear a sound in Podcaster Street?

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

Are you the kind of person, that frowns at regular radio, thinking the music airplayed is only for the kids (or at least someone younger than you and with a severe hearing defect) or maybe the level of infotainment is simply to low. Well an iPod and a good podcast seems to be a solution for an increasing amount of people world wide… In real life (RL) that is.

Being a nosy and inquisitive guy in the Second Life (SL) I see and hear alot. And though the variation is vast, I must admit, that sometimes it would be nice to be able to have a good podcast playing, rather than some redundant radioshow.

And guess what – my friend Karin Howe (RL – Karin Hoegh) just tipped me about a place called Podcaster Street.

For those of you, who don’t yet know Karin Howe, she is one of the most known podcasters in Denmark.

Karin has just rented the address Podcaster Street 7 and will be opening “Podhandle” (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Kiniski/11/191/37) soon, she tells me. In RL she often teaches and helps people, who wants to podcast themselves, and I’m sure that’s just what she’s going to do in SL too.

Of course I went to see the shop right away. But she wasn’t in at the time. I think she went for and interior designer ;-)

Check her out :-) And while you’re there – check out the surrounding buildings too. A fair share of podcasts are already available from various vendors.
